Revelation for Second Graders

Our last Bible unit is a study of the book of Revelations.  Now you might be thinking that it's a big topic for 7-9 year olds.  Well, yes it is.  They are curious about "the end."  At least once I week, I would get asked something about heaven or Jesus' return to earth.  Would there be school?  Or playgrounds?  Or pets?  Would it be boring?  When was Jesus coming again?

The book of Revelations is difficult to understand, even for adults and there are many varied interpretations on the symbolism and events.  It was not my goal to focus on these things but to focus on Jesus as the focus of heaven.  We learned about how the Apostle John was exiled and had a vision where God showed him things that would happen in the future.  (Revelations 1: 9-20)

Next, we learned about the throne room of God in heaven from Revelation 4 and 7.  In order to keep their attention and help them begin to grasp these things of God I had them draw pictures based on what the Bible tell us.

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” (Revelation 7:9-10 ESV)

The New Jerusalem was the last topic of study in the book.   I read from Revelation 21-22.

Upon the conclusion of the study they still had many questions. Probably more than when we began. I see that as a success as learning about God is an endless subject that leads us to wonder, awe and praise. My pray and heart's desire is that all these children will be with Jesus forever in heaven knowing that HE is the reward not the streets of gold or the jewel studded gates.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. (Revelation 21:3 ESV)
