The Citadella

Last Saturday, Amanda & I went into Budapest to visit the Citadella (the Citadel).  It's on a very high point of the city on Gellert Hill which is on the Buda side of the river.   The views were AMAZING!

The beautiful city of Budapest and the Danube River

A nice view of the Elizabeth & Chain Bridge (Széchenyi) over the Danube.

It was a bright sunny day!

A view of Pest.  I love the different styles and colors of buildings.

It was interesting to learn a little more about the history of Budapest.  The citadella was a important place from the time of the Hapsburg control of Hungary in 1851.  It also played a role in WWII.  On site was a small museum in which it told the Hungarian perspective of WWII.  One picture that was particularly striking was of a intense bombing of Budapest.  It was surreal to be looking at a picture of an event that really happened in the place where I was.  It wasn't just a picture any more or something far and distant in a History textbook.  I would could feel the reality of it.  It was amazing to see how much this city and people have been through and they are still so full of life and proud of their country.

Liberty Statue first built in 1947.
